Cristin's picks:
Eleanor Roosevelt. She was just ahead of her time and was an activist at a time that was frowned upon and she didn’t care. I often look up quotes from her for inspiration and perseverance when I’m having a tough time with juggling my womanhood and my ambition.
Bernie Babcock. This is a personal one for me, but she is actually my great great grandmother. Growing up I was always told stories about her and how strong of a woman she was. At the age of 29 she was widowed with five children—and refused to be a victim of circumstance. One of them was my great grandmother, Lillian . Bernie was ahead of her time and didn’t take no for an answer. To make money for her family she decided that she would write, when refused because she was a woman she decided to change her name from Julia and Bernie so that she could write from home and publishers would publish her work. When I think about the time in which she lived and her circumstance it humbles me. She published over 40 novels, several essays, articles. One of my favorite quotes that she said was:
"Well — there’s nothing to do but keep trying. Who wants an easy job anyway.”
